- Chew some gum it always helps me
- I haven't had this problem since I started wearing contacts... But some people say that freezing it for 20-30 minutes or so will help a little... But that will only last just a few minutes before it thaws and the juices start flowing....
- Put two wooden matchsticks in your mouth between your teeth. The sulfur tips of the matches will absorb some of the strong odor. Also, if you rub a spoon between your thumb and fingers under running water, it will remove the onion smell from your fingers.
- I always peel an onion under running water then chop fast!
- cold water
- I don't know what to do to prevent it, but make sure you wash your hands thoroughly after you are done handling the onion and then rinse your eyes with cool water. I use Visine to help with the irritation.
- put some eye drops in your eyes
- You can refrigerate the onion before you start in, or put it in the freezer for 15 minutes or so.
- get a fan, put it on low.... let it stands next to you while you chop onion.
- Chop more of them. You'll build a resistance to the reaction to the point where your eyes won't burn anymore.
